GALEX 53 NATIONAL COMPETITION & EXHIBITION
March 8 - April 6, 2019
GALEX is comprised of the words "Galesburg" and "Exhibit" What began as a regional competition has grown into a national juried competition and exhibition, now in its 53rd year. This year's exhibition includes over 75 pieces of art, representing 74 artists from around the country.
This year's Juror, Harlow B. Blum, awarded over $2,500 in cash prizes. Blum received his BFA (Painting) from the University of Illinois (1956), MA (Painting) Michigan State University (1959), and MFA, (Printmaking) Syracuse University (1966). He taught art at Monmouth College (1959-1999). He has continued to create collage paintings from his studio in Monmouth.
“My selections for GALEX 53 are based on the aesthetic characteristics of each work, as well as its originality, use of materials, and its structure. The quality of the 866 entries to GALEX was most impressive. In my initial review, I found that the number of worthy works was enough to fill the gallery several times over, so I commend all the artists for their participation. The task of jurying this show was truly challenging.” — Harlow Blum
