PRESS RELEASE - Galesburg Civic Art Center announces
cancellation of 2016 Art in the Park -
Regretfully, the Galesburg Civic Art Center has announced that Art in the Park will not take place this year. Held annually, the first Saturday after Labor Day, in Standish Park, Art in the Park has been part of the schedule of activities in Galesburg for 29 years.
“The Art Center understands that many will be disappointed by this development, after all Art in the Park has been a wonderful event for our community and artists for many years,” says Tuesday Çetin, Executive Director. “This was not an easy decision, however, we feel that due to the decline of participating artists and festival attendees in recent years, the Art Center should take time to review how we can better serve artists, our community, and our event sponsors.”
Art in the Park is not alone in its struggle to attract artists, Rhapsody in Bloom Arts Festival, held annually in Luthy Botanical Garden, Peoria, Illinois, was also canceled last month, reportedly due to the lack of artist participation. “While it does seem that art fairs in our region are struggling,” says Çetin, “it is important that we consider the many factors that are influencing this downward trend. For some artists, the economics of being on a circuit of art fairs versus gallery representation does not work for them, time of year and the proximity to larger fairs that may require artists to increase their inventory may also be a consideration, or maybe it’s just an off year – you just never know.”
The Galesburg Civic Art Center’s Art in the Park Committee works hard each year to bring our community a lively festival of art, local food, music, and family activities, and are equally eager to determine, with the help of artists and community members, how we can be responsive to the needs of artists and a changing community.
