GALEX 48, March 15 - April 12, 2014

GALEX a combination of the words, Galesburg and Exhibition. What began as a regional competition has grown into a national juried competition and exhibition, celebrating its 48th year in 2014. Over 50 works have been chosen by the juror, who has also chose the recipients of over $2,000 in prizes. Thank you to our award sponsors: Blick Art Materials (Purchase and Kent Leasure Fine Print Award), Lonnie Eugene Stewart (Award of Excellence and Honorable Mention), Breslin's Floor Covering (Partial Sponsor of Merit Award), McFall Monument Co. (Medallion Award) and Dowers Roofing (Juror Sponsor).

Juror's Statement

Selecting works for a juried exhibition without the benefit of an underlying theme and the opportunity to see the entries in person can be a daunting task. As a curator of a museum with a varied and diverse collection, I often find myself developing exhibitions based on specific topic or issue.  Moreover, I place great importance on the “presence” of a work of art. Photographic reproductions often mask the scale of a work of art and do not allow for a close examination of certain details.  For GALEX 48, I had to rely entirely on digital images and my own, highly subjective, personal taste.

There were certain factors that I took into account when reviewing the works. First, I looked at the technical ability and skill of the artist. Was the work of art well- executed?  Did the work have a strong sense of design and composition? Then, I tried to select works of art that represented a wide range of medium, style and subject matter, focusing in particular on artists who tried to take risks. Did the artist have a recognizable style of work? What was the artist attempting to convey and was he/she successful?

Again, I must add that jurying an exhibition is not an exact science.  I recognize the bravery of all the artists who submitted entries and subjected themselves to criticism. I thank them and also extend my gratitude to staff that invited me to participate as a juror in this exhibition.
