GALEX is composed of the words “Galesburg” and “Exhibit.” What began as a regional competition has grown into a nationally juried competition/exhibition, celebrating its 51st year. Over 50 works will be chosen for the exhibition by the juror who will also award over $2,500 in prizes.
John Bakker is a Chicago based artist and educator. His work has been exhibited in the Midwest and across the country, and is included in private, corporate, and public collections. He is a member of the faculty at Trinity Christian College on the south suburban fringe of Chicago.
In jurying exhibitions, Bakker refers to the critic Arthur Danto's notion: for something to count as a work of art, it needs both embodiment and aboutness. Embodiment refers to the physicality of the object; aboutness alludes to the way it engages other discourses or cultural issues.
The GALEX 51 exhibition is open to all artists residing in the United States. All work must have been completed within the last three years and cannot have been previously shown in Galesburg Civic Art Center galleries or gift shop. Art must be the original work of the submitter. All media are acceptable. The work is not to exceed 100 pounds or be unstable. Two dimensional work may not exceed five feet, and must be ready to hang. No work will be suspended from the ceiling. Plexiglas is preferred for framed work. Unstable pieces will not be shown. There may be only one entry (up to four works) per artist.
Purchase Award $1000
The purchase award is not returned to the Artist, it is placed in the Art Center’s Permanent collection. The artist will be awarded $1000 regardless of the price of the piece. It is optional to be considered for this award - if you wish your work to be considered, please mark the appropriate space on the entry form.
Lonnie Eugene Stewart Award of Excellence $600
Merit Award $400
Medallion Award $300
Accepted Work Delivery
Accepted works may be hand-delivered or shipped to the Galesburg Civic Art Center. Art Center hours are: Tuesday – Friday 10:30am – 4:30pm and Saturday 10:30am – 3:00pm
Attach identification to the back of your work listing artist name and address, title of piece, medium, price and “top” indication. Artists are responsible for the cost of all shipping. The Art Center prefers the use of a call tag or pre-paid shipping label sent with the piece for return shipping. If this is not possible, return delivery costs must be included in your shipment. All shipped works will be returned in original containers.
All accepted work will be insured for up to $1,000 for the duration of the exhibition. The Art Center is not responsible for items damaged due to improper packing or from damages that occur during transit. Work will not be insured for more than the retail value.
All sales made during the exhibition are subject to a 30% sales commission. Work that is not for sale may be submitted, but the insurance value must be listed.
The Galesburg Civic Art Center reserves the right to photograph works for the purpose of documentation, education and publicity.
GCAC is not responsible for work left longer than 30 days after the close of exhibition.
