Marjorie Blackwell

Marjorie Blackwell, 2007 residency, Monmouth, Illinois

While at Studios Midwest in 2007, my intended focus was on making larger versions of my molded pour paintings (extending from my "Untraversed Terrains" series), but given the great amount of down time while waiting for layers to dry, I also re-explored while at Studios Midwest in 2007 drawing with graphite.  I had a collection of dead day lilies I had saved to draw because their forms are so fascinating.  There were lilies in the yard where we stayed for the residency, too, so I drew some alive as well. This year I am continuing to draw both living and dead flowers, particularly varieties of lilies.  I'm thinking that in the future I'll draw them larger and integrate them into my abstract acrylic paintings.  For now, I'm enjoying the preciousness and personalness of the small size which you can hold in your hand and explore as you would the actual flower.
