Studios Midwest 2011
The Galesburg Civic Art Center in Galesburg, IL is accepting proposals from sculptors whose work in robotics, kinetics, or electronic/mechanical art could invite broad community interest and involvement. The Studios Midwest residency has recently revised its mission to promote the interaction of resident artists and the community. We expect that kinetics will interest and engage a diverse audience, including under-served populations, and those with little exposure to contemporary art. “Galesburg is your studio,” is a flexible concept meant to encompass a diverse range of projects and approaches; we will work closely with the artist to identify community groups for support and participation. Applicants must be enthusiastically willing to engage participant/viewers in a range of settings, and will be expected to help innovate involvement for targeted groups. In addition to a portfolio of work, artists should have some related experience in teaching, community interaction, collaborative or community work. Working artists, MFA students, and recent college graduates are welcome to apply. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop your work in a social context that will both challenge and support. Up to three artists will be accepted. The duration of the residency can be determined by the artist’s availability, but must run from two to eight weeks. The residency must take place between June 18th and August 13th. Housing and studio space are provided. Pending the scope of the project, some materials and a gallery showing can also be provided. The committee will work closely with the chosen candidate(s) to assure the most successful experience both for the artist and community. This is an urgent request.
