One of the largest area
murals, this indoor F&M bank piece spans the entire width of the bank in
downtown Galesburg. Based on the geography of Galesburg, the composition relies
on a strong use of linear perspective. The railroad tracks of the Burlington
Northern railroad switching yard cuts the composition in half. A rural, agricultural
Galesburg lies to one side with an industrial urban center with Knox College's
Old Main highlighted on the other. The tracks, which are dead center, suggest
the strong role the railroad plays in Galesburg's history.
The painting is in muted
complementary colors of red and green, is executed in the hard-edged,
minimalist styles of the 1970s.
This mural was
commissioned by Carl Pohlad, then bank owner, when this facility opened in 1981.
