"History of Education
and Industry of Galesburg" is a representational painting that seamlessly
blends past and present Galesburg history with a focus on educational and
industrial achievements.
Occupying central
positions in the mural are the old Churchill School, Carl Sandburg College and
Knox College. The Burlington Zephyr cuts a diagonal into the right corner of
the composition, a field with horse and tractor are to the left. Galesburg
inventions: the Ferris Wheel, the Gale automobile, Butler Manufacturing's grain
bins are all identified and recorded in paint. Across the top of the mural, the
names of local founders, educators and inventors are lightly stenciled.
Like pages in a book, the
images on the four-part shaped canvas
flow into one another creating a timeless Galesburg universe of past and
present achievements.
