GALEX is composed of the words “Galesburg” and “Exhibit.” What began as a regional competition has grown into a nationally juried competition/exhibition, celebrating its 45th ear. Over 50 works will be chosen for the exhibition by the juror who will also award $2,000 in prizes.
Juror
Rod Buffington is a past Executive Director of the Springfield Art Association, Assistant Professor of Art Education and Gallery Director at Eastern Illinois University and a public school secondary art teacher. He initiated the Scholastic Art Awards Program and created the idea for the Edwards Place Fine Arts Fair, Springfield Art Association. He has served as President
of the Springfield Area Arts Council, elected President of the Illinois Art Education Association and appointed to the Editorial Board for the Journal of the National Art Education Association.
Buffington began his technique of watercolor quilts in the early 1980’s. This idea came to him from watching his grandmother create her own quilts. Using watercolor paint, with 100% designer cotton fabric and then hand stitching silk button hole thread through the handmade paper portray quilt images which indicate a strong feeling for pattern development and color. Japanese and other handmade papers are used to embellish certain areas of the picture plane.
Buffington’s work is represented by Joy Horwich, Chicago. The Illinois Artisan Gallery is another venue for Buffington’s work. Major exhibits have been shown throughout the country. Included are exhibitions at the Anita Shopolsky Gallery, SOHO; Tarble Art Center, Eastern Illinois University; National Quilt Museum - other cities include, Denver, Melbourne, Greenville, Minneapolis, Nashville, Houston and Chicago. Pieces have been juried for various exhibitions including Watercolor: Illinois; Southern Illinois University - School of Medicine; and the Old Capitol Art Fair, Springfield. Numerous awards have been received by Buffington including the Old Capitol Art Fair (Best of Show and Most Outstanding Portfolio); Purchase Awards for the Civic Collection, City of Springfield and the Springfield Art Association.
